On June 16, 1969, a riot which will forever be remembered as Stonewall began. This riot continued on for two days and is considered the beginning of the fight for equality among the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered community. The road to equality for the LGBT community has been long and uphill, often feeling like a dance; one step forward and two steps back. Progress has been made, according to a Washington Post/ABC poll, the percentage of Americans who agree that gays and lesbians should be able to marry is higher than those who disagree. The support is visible, currently nine States allow same sex marriage and another eight have protections for the LGBT community within their states.
Same sex unions are a hot button issue for American politics, and with each hot button comes a flood of political cartoons. Our group has found cartoons in four different categories; Religion, Politics, Chick-fil-a, and Society. Each of these categories have been used as arguments in the fight both for and against the LGBT community. We tried to find cartoons on both sides of the aisle, but did find it difficult to represent those against same sex marriage.
A quick history lesson from the view of the media on the road to equality for the LGBT community
